Asus P8P67 pro Hackintosh Guide

Here is a shockingly simple guide to help setup a Mountain Lion Hackintosh on a P8P67 pro based PC with audio, graphics, Bluetooth fully functional! My build now duel boots into Windows 8 and OS X Mountain Lion. This guide will tell you exactly how I did it. The BIOS version for my P8P67 pro is 2103. This guide may not work properly if you are on some other BIOS(the latest 3xxx BIOS causes problems with Hackintosh audio). So you may need to flash your BIOS to 2103. Both, BIOS flashing tool and BIOS are available at ASUS P8P67 pro downloads page here. Asus P8P67 pro Hackintosh guide will be broken in 2 parts:

Installing OS X Mountain Lion:

Note: In case you have Asus p8p67 pro + NVidia card at step number 6, use the bootflag ‘PCIRootUID=0’. To use this bootflag, simply type it in(at the bootloader screen). Even after successful install, every time you boot into your hackintosh, you need to type this bootflag at the bootloader screen.

Mac OS X Mountain Lion – Post Install:


Mountain Lion comes with out of box support for NVidia GTX 500 and 600 series. So the GTX 570 in my Hackintosh build was working without any effort at all. The Hackintosh support for AMD Radeon cards has always been good. AMD cards from 4000, 5000 and 6000(except 6900 series) are supported.


Ethernet works natively. No need to do anything.


Currently, Atheros 3010 Bluetooth chip, which is soldered onto the P8P67 [Vanilla, Pro, Deluxe, …] doesn’t work out of the box.

Though, Asus USB-BT211 dongle, which uses the same chipset is known to work well. The difference between the two is that P8P67’s chip lacks flash memory where the firmware is stored, so it has to be uploaded by OS Bluetooth driver before it can be used. This can be done by simply booting to another OS first and then restarting and booting into OS X.

So, there are currently the following workarounds:

1) Boot to Windows first, then restart to Mac OS X. Note: You should have Asus P8P67 Bluetooth drivers installed in Windows. Get the latest drivers from Asus’s website or use the driver disk which came with the motherboard.

2) The same method works with Linux, as it has support for Atheros 3010 driver and firmware out-of-the-box (tried with Kubuntu 11.04, but should work with any modern Linux). You may even half-way boot from Ubuntu Live CD.

3) Install Linux under VMware Fusion, choose “Connect Atheros USB device” in the right bottom corner. The Linux will upload the firmware, and device will appear as “ASUSTek Bluetooth Host Controller”. Then, you can disconnect it from VMware, run System Preferences -> Bluetooth, and disable/enable “Show Bluetooth status in the menu bar”.

After that Bluetooth will work in Mac OS until next power off.

Making audio work was a pain. Asus P8P67 pro has ALC892, so in theory, downloading the latest Multibeast from tonymacx86’s website and installing the audio kexts for ALC892 by checking the following boxes should work.

System Utilities
-Rebuild Caches (Select)
-Repair Permissions (Select)

Drivers & Bootloaders
-Kext & Enablers
—Realtek ALCxx
—-AppleHDA Rollback
—-Non-DSDT HDAEnabler
—–ALC892 (Select)

For some reason(at least in my case) getting audio to work with Multibeast 4.6 or 5.0 was a hit or a miss until I tried the same with Multibeast 4.0.3

The following is sure to work. Ignore the above and do this instead.

Download Multibeast 4.03 from here. Run it. Check the required boxes as shown and install.

After install, restart and you should have audio.

That’s it. Enjoy your successful hackintosh!

Case Cooler Master 690 II Advanced (This case has a hot swappable internal HDD bay on top which makes it excellent for such projects)

    I will use Mac OS X the day I can afford a MacBook Pro (which may be about 50 years from now on 😐 ).

      I have to disagree with that. Once a hackintosh is successful, it performs Exactly how apple manufactured computer does. In fact its even better, as its possible to build a much more powerful PC with a little over half the price of a comparable mac. 🙂

      1. Well this is the first time I’m meeting someone disagreeing with that. You see, you can get a powerful rig but a hardware + software compatibility is the first thing that’s important. Apple software is designed specifically to work with hardware provided by Apple. Yes, with tweaks you may get satisfactory, or even ‘above average’ performance on a hackintosh, but I will never agree that it can be better or exactly same as on Apple hardware.

        I’ve seen a lot of hackintoshes and macs over the years. The performance of hackintoshes were really satisfactory (my one was below average but I’ve tested it on others’). Nobody would guess that it’s not real mac if the rig is hidden. But then again, the performance on a real mac cannot be beaten.

        But if you feel that it’s exactly the same, that is definitely good for you. 🙂 Mental satisfaction plays a big role on everything.

        1. I assure you I am not talking about just satisfactory or ‘above average’ performance; But instead ‘blow-the-comparable-imacs out-of-the-water-performance’. The most popular mac performance benchmarking software Geekbench has its online highscore charts full of hackintosh builds. In fact, real macs aren’t even in the top 20 list! Its not about me ‘feeling’ that performance is the same, the benchmark scores do the talking. My current build scores 14364 and my friend’s build even touched 16k! I have had 3 of my own hackintosh builds and never once was a mac software was ‘incompatible’ or less performant in them.

          The most important thing to do the research and get the right hardware, get the all the right kexts to get the hackintosh successfully established. Once that’s done, OS X behaves exactly as if its installed on apple hardware. Its entirely possible that the hackintosh builds you saw didn’t have the correct kexts installed or something else. I agree about the mental satisfaction part. Hackintoshes aren’t for every one. As the setup requires quite a lot of research and bit of technical skill if one needs to make their own DSDT. But I, and a lot of others in OSx86 community actually find the challenge fun. So a real imac will be too boring and underpowered for my needs.

          As far as desktop hackintoshs are concerned ‘apple hardware’ is same as what we can buy off shelf. As apple too buys the CPU from Intel, graphics cards from AMD/NVidia, HDDs and RAMs from other OEMs, etc, puts them in a shiny box and ships them. This is the reason installing OS X on a non apple PC became possible after apple shifted from the Power PC platform.

          When it comes to laptops its a different story because of custom motherboards and power management issues.

          Taking a hard, unchangeable stance saying ‘I will never agree that it can..’ is never good. One should always be open.

    1. Yes everything will work the same, except audio. You would need to research a bit for that. As ‘pro’ version has ALC892, and the non pro has something else. Use Google to find out.. 🙂

      1. By audio do you mean only that from the ports on the motherboard, or all audio? I use a headset with a built in sound-card that works on real macs (and therefore successfully set-up hackintoshes), would that still work without extra fuss?

        I haven’t used on-board audio in the past three years simply because of comfortable the headset is and how often I can’t be disturbing to family, so that’s of the least importance to me. Thanks! And hopefully you get back to me nearly six months later!

        1. Ya that’s correct. Installing kexts for ALC 892 will make the audio ports on the motherboard functional for Asus P8P67 pro. With these ports functional, you can plug in any headphones/speakers in. Although this headset with built in soundcard must be great, but on a day you are feeling particularly adventurous you could try installing such audio kexts. Its nice to have options.
          But during research, I have broken my hackintosh a LOT of times, only to start all over again. So be very careful; I am sure you know this. 🙂

  4. Hi, do you have usb 3.0 working? I had to install the renesas driver from multibeast 4.6 and it works but i cant completely shutdown or reboot i have to do it manually. Have tested a lot ok ketxs but no one works. Thanks

    1. In my case, the renesas USB 3 driver from multibeast works just fine. I have used it multiple times on mine and my friend’s P8P67 pro based builds. If you have the same board, try installing your hackintosh afresh and see if multibeast can make it work.

  5. thank you, you were such a great help for me today =) but can i ask you one thing please? so right now i can only boot with my bootable usb if i install any other bootloader from unibeast it crashes and gives me these error messages, do you know how i can fix it?


    1. I guess you have tried this already: Download and open the latest multibeast, scroll down to find ‘Drivers & Bootloaders’ –> ‘Bootloaders’ –> ‘Chimera’. Select and install. But for some reason this isn’t working for you.

      This could be giving errors as after installing the bootloader from multibeast you don’t get enough time to enter your bootflags (in case you use any). In order to avoid this, you can make those boot flags permanent, so that they’ll automatically be entered into the bootloader every time you start OS X. Boot up your hackintosh, go to /Extra in your Mac hard drive and open the file “org.Chameleon.boot.plist” with TextEdit. Under the Kernel Flags sections, enter any boot flags that you think you’ll need.

      I am just guessing this could solve your problem as you didn’t actually specify what kind of errors(kernel panic?) are you getting when using on HDD bootloader.

    1_My BIOS is 2303, so could you teach me how to dowgrade it to 2103 [SAFE] ???
    2_My VGA is asus AMD Radeon 6850, so it too hard to config this card.
    2_My ethernet only ALWAYS work after i restart 2nd.

  7. 1) Here’s a guide on downgrading the BIOS. I have not tried to do this on my computer, but others have:
    ONLY downgrade IF your audio isn’t working, or you have any other serious issue.

    2.) AMD Radeon 6850 should work by default. Are you able to change screen resolution? If it is not working, try using these custom kexts:
    Install them using a tool called KextBeast, which you can download from here:

    3.) I think this is because of the BIOS. I am not sure. Open the MultiBeast tool, try installing the Realtek Gigabit Ethernet first. If not, try installing Lnx2Mac’s driver, which works better for some people.

  8. I have done this entire guide, and I can get Mountain Lion installed and all of the drivers to run but the bootlader does not work. I have to leave in the USB and boot from the USB to get to Mountain Lion instead of it just automatically booting into Mountain Lion when I turn on my computer. I already tried installing chimera from multibeast.
    My system specs are:
    -AMD Radeon 6850 HD
    -Intel i7 2600k 3.4 GHz
    -12 Gb of DDR3 RAM
    -Asus p8p67 pro Motherboard
    -1 TB WD Hard Drive


  9. just decided I wanted to do this and this is damn near the same build I have on my pc. I am now starting video editing and photography and really want a Mac but cant afford the Mac Pro.
